Contracting and Subcontracting National Survey Results Released
Legal Nurse Consulting Institute, LLC conducted a survey of legal nurse consultants across the nation to poll their experiences as a subcontractor or contractor.
By contractor, we are referring to the legal nurse consultant who has an overflow of work and contracts another nurse for case reviews. The subcontractor, sometimes referred to as an independent contractor, is a nurse who reviews cases for an established LNC who has an overflow of work. The survey was distributed to approximately 1000 RNs. 244 LNCs responded to the survey.
The initial questions gather demographic data. Below you will see the top two answers for each question:
- Of the RNs participating in this survey 67% had more than 20 years of nursing experience and 24% had 11-20 years of experience.
- 37% of the nurses participating in the survey were from the South. Tied for 2nd place, with 18% each, were the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states.
- 30% of nurses participating in the survey work in critical care while another 11% work in med-surg.
- 42% of nurses responding to the survey had a BSN degree while 21% had a MSN.
- 29% of the nurses polled had worked as a legal nurse consultant for 1-5 years. 27% worked as a LNC for 6-10 years.
- 21% of the nurses had no legal nurse consulting education while another 21% had completed an at-home study program.
- LNCs working primarily in medical malpractice totaled 59% with another 10% working primarily with personal injury cases.
- 36% of legal nurse consultants reported working as a subcontractor. Likewise, 34% of legal nurse consultants had worked as a contractor.
